What Is HYROX? A Beginner’s Guide

So, What Exactly Is HYROX?

HYROX is a global fitness race that combines running with functional workout stations. It has exploded in popularity over the last few years, and for good reason: it gives everyday athletes a real finish line to train for, without the unpredictability of other fitness competitions.

The concept is simple. You run 1 kilometer, complete one workout station, then run another kilometer and hit the next station. You repeat this until you have finished 8 runs and 8 stations. Your score is your total time from the starting horn to the moment you finish your final rep.

Here is the part that makes HYROX special: the format is identical at every event, in every city, anywhere in the world. There are no surprise workouts and no changing rules. That means you know exactly what you are training for, and you can compare your time from El Paso to one in London, Chicago, or Berlin, or measure this year against last year.

The Race Format at a Glance

Every HYROX race follows the same sequence. Picture it like this: 8 kilometers of running total, broken into eight 1 km segments, each one capped off with a functional station. Between every run and station you pass through the Roxzone, the transition area where the clock keeps ticking.

The races are held indoors in large arenas and convention halls, so there is no weather and no terrain to worry about. There is also no time limit. Whether you cross the line in 60 minutes or two hours, you get an official time and a finisher patch. For most first-timers in the Open division, finishing takes somewhere between 80 and 120 minutes.

The 8 Stations

The stations always appear in the same order, and each one follows a 1 km run. Here is the full lineup, along with the weights for the Open and Pro divisions (men’s and women’s standards shown as M / W):

# Station Distance / Reps Open (M / W) Pro (M / W)
1 SkiErg 1000m Same for all Same for all
2 Sled Push 50m 152 kg / 102 kg 202 kg / 152 kg
3 Sled Pull 50m 103 kg / 78 kg 153 kg / 103 kg
4 Burpee Broad Jumps 80m Bodyweight Bodyweight
5 Row 1000m Same for all Same for all
6 Farmers Carry 200m 2x24 kg / 2x16 kg 2x32 kg / 2x24 kg
7 Sandbag Lunges 100m 15 kg / 10 kg 20 kg / 15 kg
8 Wall Balls 100 reps 6 kg / 4 kg 9 kg / 6 kg

Note: Sled weights include the weight of the sled itself. For wall balls, the standard also includes a target height (3m for men, 2.7m for women). The SkiErg, row, and burpee broad jumps are the same for every division.

Divisions: Finding Your Starting Point

One of the best things about HYROX is that there is a division for everyone, no matter your experience level:

  • Open: The most accessible division, with moderate weights and no time pressure. This is where the large majority of athletes compete, and it is the ideal starting point for your first race.
  • Pro: Heavier weights across every loaded station, built for experienced racers chasing competitive times and World Championship qualification.
  • Doubles: A two-person team that runs all 8 km together and shares the station work however you choose. This is widely considered the friendliest way to tackle your very first HYROX.
  • Relay: A team of four splits the race, with each athlete completing 2 runs and 2 stations. It is the most social format and a favorite for groups of friends and corporate teams.

Within the Open and Pro divisions, athletes are also ranked by age group, so you are always being measured against people in your own bracket. The minimum age to compete is 16, and there is no upper age limit.

HYROX vs. CrossFit: What’s the Difference?

If you come from a functional fitness background, you might be wondering how HYROX compares to CrossFit. Both build serious all-around fitness, but they test different qualities.

CrossFit thrives on variety. The workouts change daily and blend strength, gymnastics, and conditioning, often with movements you do not know in advance. HYROX is the opposite by design: it is one standardized race that looks the same every single time, and it is built around endurance under load, pairing running with repeated functional stations.

Put simply, CrossFit rewards broad, adaptable capacity, while HYROX rewards pacing, running fitness, and the mental grit to keep moving as fatigue piles up. The good news is that the two complement each other beautifully. Plenty of CrossFitters cross straight over into HYROX, and the running-plus-strength base you build for one carries into the other.

Can a Beginner Really Do This?

Yes, and that is the whole point. HYROX was created to be a sport for everybody, not just elite athletes. The Open division uses manageable weights, there is no time cap, and there is no qualification standard to enter. You simply sign up and show up.

Most first-timers train for about 8 to 12 weeks before their race. If you already run and lift somewhat regularly, you may need less. The key is training the specific demands of the event: building your running engine, getting comfortable with the stations, and learning how to move efficiently when you are tired. That is exactly what a dedicated HYROX program is built to do.
